AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Concordia University Chicago baseball team took on The College of New Jersey Lions on their final day in the Sunshine State, falling 10-1.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.) would lead at the plate on the day with two hits in three at bats.
- Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.), Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.), and Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) would be the only remaining Cougars to secure hits on the day.
- Anthony Pullano (Park Ridge, Ill.) would be the only Cougar arm to not allow a hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A quick top of the first would force the Cougars to play early defense after a strikeout and a double play knocked out the first three Cougar batters. The Lions would capitalize on this early opportunity and after two walks would allow a hit to score early for the Lions. With runners on second and third, the Lions would continue to smash at the plate and pick up eight runs in the first inning before Richard Gomez (Chicago, Ill.) would be able to force the last out with a fly out to center.
- After taking a beating in the bottom of the first, the Cougars looked to get things going offensively and start their climb back. With back-to-back groundouts to second, the Cougars would see one hit on the inning with a single up the middle from Anderson.
- A stalemate would ensue for the next inning with both teams seeing quick at bats. This would quickly come to a halt when a single to center would kick start another monstrous inning for the Lions. The Cougars would get out of bottom of the third giving up three hits and two runs before a strikeout from Gomez would get them out of a pinch.
- The Cougars came out swinging in the top of the fourth with a leadoff single from Dorsch before a drop third passed ball would allow Dorsch to make his way to third and Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) to safely get on base. With runners on first and third and two outs, the Cougars would be unable to pick up a run.
- The Cougars would manage to hold the Lions for the remainder of the game with pitches from Bryce Jones (Ottowa, Ill.), Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.), and Pullano.
- In the top of the sixth, the Cougars would spark a little flame with a leadoff double from Cajigas paired with a single through the left side from Kasik to safely score Cajigas. An athletic double play from the Lions would close the inning with the Cougars only able to add on one run and make it a nine run ball game.
- The rest of the game would fall flat as each team only collected one hit each with no runs scored.
