Cougars Fall in Extra Innings

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Concordia University Chicago baseball team took on Fontbonne University on Wednesday, March 6, falling to the Griffins 9-8 in ten innings.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the Cougars with two hits in five at bats including one homerun.
  • Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) had another monstrous day at the plate with three hits in five at bats for two RBIs including one triple.
  • Aidan Teahan (Park Ridge, Ill.) got the start on the day with two innings pitched with one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars kicked things off a big time homer from Dorsch to put them up 1-0. A hit from Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) would move Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) around and a single from Mahler score the second run of the inning. Two errors from the Griffins would score two more runs and the Cougar would close the first half inning with a 4-0 lead.
  • The Griffins would jump right back after two walks and a double would score the first two runs of the inning. A strikeout and a fly out to right field would close the inning with the Cougars still up by two.
  • A stagnant half inning would give the Griffins the chance to make a run back with back to back doubles to cut the deficit down to 4-3.
  • The top of the fourth inning would get the Cougars moving offensively again with a single from Kasik and a triple from Mahler would put the Cougars up 7-3.
  • With fresh arms coming in every inning for the Cougars, two scoreless innings from Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.) and Bryce Jones (Ottowa, Ill.) would let the Cougars get things moving in the right direction for the Cougars.
  • A leadoff double from Alejandro Muñoz (Evergreen Park, Ill.) would put him in position to score off two ground outs and the Cougars would go up 8-3 as they scored their last run of the game in the top of the fifth.
  • A big inning for the Griffins would score three runs on two hits and make it a two run game.
  • With the Griffins able to tie things up in the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars would be unable to jump ahead in the top of the ninth, pressuring their defense to force extra innings.
  • Making his pitching debut for the Cougars, Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) would secure three outs on four batters including a strikeout to force the game to a tenth inning.
  • The top of the tenth would be ineffective for the Cougars and the game would remain tied up heading to the bottom of the tenth. Three consecutive hits for the Griffins would score the game winning run and close the game 9-8 after ten innings of play.
