Dorsch Homers to Secure Cougar Victory

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Concordia University Chicago baseball team continued their stretch of Florida games with a scrappy matchup with John Carroll University. The 11-8 victory for the Cougars makes them 3-0 in Florida and improves their overall record to 4-2.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the lone Cougar to homer today picking up a three run shot over the right field wall. Dorsch went 2-2 at the plate with three walks.
  • Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.), Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.), and Alejandro Muñoz (Evergreen Park, Ill.) all secured doubles on the day with Kasik picking up three RBIs and Muñoz picking up one.
  • Seven Cougars threw on the mound for a combined six strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blue Streaks struck first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.  Needing to get things going, a leadoff double from Cajigas to left center would do just the job. With back-to-back walks for the Cougars, a bases loaded situation with Kasik at the plate would send all three base runners home after a long ball out to left field would secure a double. With things evened up, the Cougars continued to capitalize on the momentum with a single from Mahler paired with a walk for Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) to give another bases loaded situation to Muñoz to score another and give the Cougars their first lead of the day.
  • An attempted double play for the Blue Streaks would secure one out but allow Mahler to score from third. A steal from Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) would draw the throw down and allow Hickman to score and jump the Cougars out by two. The final run of the inning would come off a wild pitch that would allow Boswell to sneak into home and give the Cougars the 7-3 lead after one full inning.
  • The Blue Streaks battled back and cut the Cougar lead down to one in the top of the second before Anthony Pullano (Park Ridge, Ill.) would take to the mound to close the inning. With the Cougars unable to get through on offense, the pressure turned back to Pullano once again who retired three quick batters in the top of the third. With the Cougars once again unable to answer behind the bats, the Blue Streaks had the opportunity to bounce back in the top of the fourth off a two run homer to retake the lead over the Cougars.
  • The Cougars and Blue Streaks would face a stalemate for two innings until the Cougars finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth.
  • A leadoff single to left field from Dorsch and two consecutive walks would load the bases up. With two outs the Cougars would pinch hit Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.) who would ground out to second but advance all runners, officially putting the Cougars back on top 8-7.
  • In the top of the seventh, with things all tied up, David Deimling (Bloomingdale, Ill.) would step to the mound and retire three batters in 12 pitches to let the bats keep running hot.
  • A leadoff pinch hitter for the Cougars got things going as Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would single up the middle. After a Cajigas walk put two runners on base, a big time homerun from Dorsch would put the Cougars up by three for the remainder of the game.
  • The final two innings for the Cougars would see David Gutierrez (Hesperia, Calif.) and Mike Jones Jr. (Shorewood, Ill.) throw the final seven batters of the game and leave the Cougars with the 11-8 victory.
