Cougars Sweep Beavers on Day One in Iowa

Storm Lake, Iowa – The Concordia University Chicago STUNT team took the trek to Iowa to play a four game series against Buena Vista University with the first two games taking place on Friday night. The Cougars swept the Beavers on day one.

GAME ONE

Quarter One – Partner Stunts
The Cougars and Beavers kicked things off in the first quarter with each team securing a point off the six routines called. With a slower first quarter, things would need to spark up to give the Cougars the momentum they would need.

Quarter Two – Pyramids & Tosses
In the second quarter, with the Cougars leading 2-1, BVU selected routine four where CUC decided to defer. Following CUC's deferment BVU took a timeout to determine if they were going to also go ahead with their routine. With BVU having to perform routine four and receive less than eight deductions, the Beavers opted to change their selected routine to routine two where the Cougars would receive the point to close the first half with the 3-1 lead.

Quarter Three – Jumps & Tumbling
In the first routine of the third quarter seven Cougars took to the mat to perform routine one where the Cougars were awarded the point. Following a BVU challenge the point would be re-evaluated and mark the routine a tie and award both teams the point, making it a 4-2 game in favor of the Cougars.

Following the challenge, the Cougars would select routine three in which the Beavers would defer, forcing the Cougars to perform with less than eight deductions to receive the point. With a few stepouts and wide stances during the routine, the Cougars would not be able to successfully secure the point and keep the score stagnant.

With routine one selected, both teams would square off with BVU receiving the tumbling point and making it a one point game. The Cougars would take a timeout to regroup before taking the mat for routine four. The Beavers once again deferred and the Cougars took the mat solo without scoring the point once again.

With both teams deferring the final routine call of the quarter, the Cougars would head into the final quarter with the one point lead.

Quarter Four – Team Routine
With the Beavers calling a timeout to open the fourth quarter, the teams would come out refreshed to perform routine two. The Cougars stepped out initially for partner stunts while BVU deferred the first part of the routine and only stepped in for jumps and tumbling. With a strong finish on the pyramids with clean, high catches the Cougars would pick up two points with the Beavers picking up one.

Routine three would be selected with both teams staying off the mat for partner stunts and pyramids and tosses. The Cougars would step on for jumps and tumbling competing only against the total number of deductions in which they would receive no points.

Routine one was called in which both teams performed for the entirety of the routine. The Cougars would take the point for partner stunts while also taking the point for pyramids and tosses making it a standoff for the final point of the routine. With their overall clean finishes, the Beavers would take the final point of the routine and bring the overall score to 8-5 in favor of the Cougars.

The Cougars would call routine four, competing in partner stunts solo on the mat. Despite hitting clean one-legged stunts with a strong base, the Cougars would not earn any points. Cleaning up their footwork from earlier in the game, the Cougars would secure the point in jumps and tumbling before opting out for the pyramids and tosses portion of the routine.

The Cougars would close the game with the 9-5 victory before preparing to hit the mat for game two.

GAME TWO

Quarter One – Partner Stunts
Kicking off game two, the Cougars called routine two with the Beavers deferring. The Cougars were unable to receive the point handing things over to BVU to call routine one in which the Cougars would secure the point and take the 1-0 lead.

Quarter Two – Pyramids & Tosses
Routine two was called to start the second quarter, and with both teams stepping onto the floor a tie would make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Cougars. Competing in routine one next, the Cougars looked to capitalize on their back-to-back points, but the Beavers would steal the point and tie things up.  The Cougars challenged the call and unfortunately lose a timeout due to the failed challenge. With routines five and six being called with both teams deferring, the first half of play would conclude with a tie game at two apiece.

Quarter Three – Jumps & Tumbling
Quarter three kicked off with routine one and a tough competition between the two teams. Evening the score at three apiece, the Beavers would jump ahead of the Cougar off routine one. The Cougars would tackle routine three competing against themselves, needing to complete the routine with less than eight deductions. After successfully being awarded the point, the Beavers would challenge but the Cougars would keep the point and tie the game at four apiece and close the third quarter.

Quarter Four – Team Routine
With routine one kicking off the fourth quarter, the Beavers deferred for partner stunts leaving the Cougars the opportunity to steal the point. Moving into jumps & tumbling, both teams competed and ultimately saw a tie. With the Beavers winning the point for pyramids and tosses, things would still be tied up after the first routine of the fourth quarter. With an unsuccessful CUC challenge, the Cougars would lose a timeout and the Beavers would keep things tied up at six apiece.

The Cougars would jump ahead with a point awarded for jumps & tumbling to put them up 7-6 with another two routines to go.

Going head-to-head for two portions of routine three, the jumps & tumbling would see a tie from the both the squads while BVU would tie things up with the point in pyramids and tosses to bring things to an even eight. In the final routine of the game, the routine four would see the Cougars competing against themselves in an attempt to secure the points. Only needing to pick up one point to take the victory, the Cougars would pick up the point in partner stunts and secure the 9-8 victory.
