Eagles Fly Over Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia Chicago men's soccer team (4-11, 3-8 NACC) played its final home game of the regular season this afternoon, hosting the Eagles of Edgewood College (15-1-2, 9-0-1 NACC). Despite a strong opening 20 minutes of play, holding the Eagles scoreless, the Cougars fell to the conference leaders, 6-1.

Inside the Box
  • Michael Senese (Naperville, Ill.) scored the Cougars' lone goal in the 61st minute.
  • Nethan Gudiel (Chicago, Ill.) made six saves, while Kyle Schultz (Pingree Grove, Ill.) made two.
  • Senese led the team with four shots, two of which were on goal.
How it Happened
The Cougars stood their ground for the first 20 minutes of play, keeping the Eagles at bay. Gudiel immediately made a save 28 seconds into the game and another in the fifth minute. The defense hindered Edgewood's charges forward and created some chances for Senese and Omar Figueroa (Chicago, Ill.). However, the Eagles would strike in the 27th minute, scoring twice in the span of 60 seconds. Edgewood seemed to find their groove from then on and Gudiel had to stand strong against close range shots.

However, the Eagles scored again in the 32nd minute and took a 3-0 lead into the break.

Edgewood quickly increased its lead to 5-0, scoring twice in the first five minutes of the second half. Garrett Poynter (Noblesville, Ind.) took an opportunity in the 54th minute but had his shot saved by the Eagles' goalkeeper. Just three minutes later, the Eagles scored once again to make it 6-0. The Cougars continued to fight and found their own goal as Senese was able to place one into the back of the net, assisted by Julian Delgado (Chicago, Ill.). Unfortunately, that was the only goal for the Cougars, and Concordia fell, 6-1.

The Cougars' last regular season game will be Wednesday October 30 at 2:30 pm. Concordia heads just down the road to face Dominican. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
