Cougars Scorch Inferno

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's tennis team traveled late yesterday afternoon to Alverno College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Cougars dominated the afternoon defeating the Inferno in a 9-0 sweep for their second win of the season. The win was also their second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) win this season.

Doubles Competition

The Cougars began the day with their first point thanks to duo Amelia Engelman (McKinney, Texas) and Kamila Giza (East Dundee, Ill.) winning 8-2. This was their third consecutive win in doubles competition.

They were not the only duo with strong impressive performances. The following pair of Jessica Parker (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and Mackenzie Straulin (Johnsburg, Ill.) were victorious 8-1. Fellow teammates Tatiana Overton (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and Amirah Shakir (Dekalb, Ill.) closed the doubles competition with another 8-1 win.

Singles Competition

On a day, which everyone stood out for their incredible performances, Shakir highlighted that by sweeping both rounds against her opponent 6-0.

She was not the only player on the team who swept a round. Engelman and Parker swept the first round and second round 6-0 in their respective matches on their way to victory. Along with Demi Presto-Martin (Brookfield, Ill.) who made her singles debut yesterday swept the second round, after a strong 6-1 opening round win.

Giza followed up her win in doubles, with a singles victory 6-1 and 6-2 in both rounds.

The perfect sweep was completed by Overton in a competitive back and forth affair that saw her prevail, winning 6-4 in both rounds.

Looking Ahead

The Cougars will look to make it two consecutive conference wins as they travel back to Wisconsin once more. This time is against Edgewood College on Wednesday October 4th at 4:30pm. Coverage for all our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
