Cougars Fail to Slow Aurora Offense Down

RIVER FOREST, ILL. — Conference play continued for the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team (0-7, 0-3) on Wednesday when the reigning Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference champion Aurora Spartans (4-2-2, 2-0-1) visited River Forest. After a close first half, Aurora turned on the afterburners in the second half and defeated CUC 13-1.

-Inside the Box Score

  • Garrett Poynter (Noblesville, Ind.) scored his team leading fourth goal of the season.

  • Giovanni Velasquez (Cicero, Ill.) recorded the only other shot on goal for the Cougars.

  • Kyle Schultz (Pingree Grove, Ill.) made nine saves in his half of action.

-How it Happened

First Half

Aurora struck on their first shot on goal at the 10:20 mark when Jaziel Enriquez scored. The Spartans struck again four minutes later on a Gio Villegas goal. A penalty kick at 22:17 added another goal to Aurora's total thanks to Enrique Gonzalez.

Concordia finally found a response at 38:45 when Poynter headed a pass from Velasquez into the back of the goal, making the score 3-1, which is what the scoreboard read at halftime.

Second Half

Schultz came in to replace Joseph Perez (Crystal Lake, Ill.) in goal for Concordia to start the second half, but he could do little to slow down a Spartans team who came out firing after halftime. Aurora put up six goals within the first 14:30 of the back half, building their lead to 9-1. CUC stepped up the defense for 13 minutes, but Aurora picked up the scoring streak again at the 72:26 mark, scoring another four goals, including a last second goal, by the time the final buzzer rang. The final score read 13-1 in favor of the Spartans.
