Cougars Draw After Scoreless Affair

RIVER FOREST, ILL. — Playing their second game in as many days, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team (2-4-1) welcomed the Lake Forest College Foresters (2-3-3) to River Forest on Sunday afternoon. After 90 minutes of action, neither team was able to find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 tie.

-Inside the Box Score

  • Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.) recorded nine saves in her first solo shutout of the season. The Cougars as a whole have not allowed a goal in their past two contests.

  • Julianna Paulsen (Villa Park, Ill.) led all Cougars with two shots on goal.

  • Grace Glodoski (Plainfield, Ill.) and Pamela Saldivar (Chicago, Ill.) also recorded shots on goal for CUC.

-How it Happened

First Half

Defense dominated the first half of half one, with the first shot not coming until the 20:01 mark when a header from Lake Forest's Anna Hoffman rang off the right pipe. The Foresters generated some more offense soon after, putting two shots on goal within 13 seconds, but both were handled by the CUC goalie, Sheriff.

Concordia finally made Lake Forest goalkeeper Franca Finch work at 25:54 when a shot by Paulsen was saved. Sheriff was then put back to work at 36:57, when a shot from Caitlin Mulcahy looked destined for the top right corner of the net, but Sheriff made an airborne, one-handed save to keep the score 0-0. And that is where the score stood when the halftime buzzer sounded with no team being able to break through offensively.

Second Half

Lake Forest came out applying the offensive pressure in the second half, putting a shot on goal at 55:20, but Sheriff stood tall once again. A few minutes later, Paulsen then recorded another shot on goal but could not beat Finch.

Rain and wind then hit Concordia Stadium, making playing conditions difficult for both squads, but the Cougars still managed to almost pot the first goal of the game. Off a free kick, Saldivar got a piece of a centering pass. Her shot tipped off Finch and continued rolling into the goal before a Forester defender came in at the last second to kick it out, keeping the game scoreless.

The Foresters responded with their own near goal. A close shot from Izzy DeStefano was saved by Sheriff, but the rebound rolled right to another Forester who put it past an out-of-position Sheriff. However, Lake Forest was called offsides prior to the goal, wiping it off the board.

Both goalies continued to duel as time continued to run out in the game. Sheriff was really put to work starting at the 80:27 mark, making a pair of saves within 1:21 of each other. For their efforts, both goalies were awarded with a shutout as the score read 0-0 when the final buzzer rang.
