Spartans Narrowly Defeat Cougars In Defensive Showdown

AURORA, ILL. — Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play has truly come into full swing for the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team. Heading to Aurora University, the Cougars faced off against the Spartans in an early afternoon battle. While both teams showed off stellar defense, the Spartans would defeat the Cougars with a final score of 1-0.

Inside The Box Score:

  • Auloni Burnell (Riverside, Calif.) had a complete game in goal and secured her career-high of 13 saves

  • Both Hannah Bowers (Helena, Mont.) and Grace Glodoski (Plainfield, Ill.) would have shots, with Bowers having the only shot on goal

Aurora would not start off slow, as they immediately took the game into their control. In the 2nd minute, they would score to make it 1-0.

Throughout the first half, the Spartans would continue to take the ball from the Cougars and try to find space in the net. However, Cougar defenders Valeria Fernandez (Burbank, Ill.), Melica Kenworthy (New Lenox, Ill.), Meagan Wilkinson-McQuaid (Georgetown, Ky.), and Bowers would help to keep Aurora out of the offensive striking space.

Burnell would also continue to have a lights out day in goal and make some incredible stops at the net. Entering halftime, the Spartans would continue to lead this game 1-0.

To start off the second half, Aurora would find two shots on goal, both saved by Burnell, to try to start some momentum. Glodoski would find some room and give an opportunity for the Cougars to score, but would come up just short.

As the two opponents battled back and forth, it was clear it would be an even match for the remainder of the game. In the 86th minute, Bowers would get the ball on target, but was stopped by the Spartans goalkeeper.

The Cougars would end up losing to the Spartans with a final score of 1-0.

CUC women's soccer will stay on the road this weekend, as they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College for a Saturday game, 1 p.m. start time. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
