Cougars Sweep Stars to Close Home 2023 Season Play

RIVER FOREST, ILL. – In a massive high-stake conference matchup between the Concordia University Chicago Cougars and the Dominican University Stars, the Cougars were able to pull the sweep and keep their hopes of making the conference tournament alive.

The Cougars honored their ten seniors prior to the game today while having guest Pastor Jeff Leininger throw out an honorary first pitch before the game started.
GAME ONE
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) led the Cougar offense going four-for-five at the plate while picking up two RBIs.
  • Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz) followed behind going two-for-four at the plate.
  • Wyatt McLaughlin (Cave Creek, Ariz) pitched 5.2 innings on the mound for the Cougars picking up a new career-high eight strikeouts on 25 batters faced while throwing 111 pitches in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McLaughlin went to work early for the Cougars closing the top of the first scoreless after picking up on strikeout on the inning. The Cougars went to work behind the plate and quickly took the lead after a leadoff double from senior Christian Jacob (Phoenix, Ariz.) would get a runner in scoring position and a sacrifice fly to centerfield would score Jacob and give the Cougars the 1-0 lead.
  • After the Stars were able to tie things back up, the Cougars were able to regain the lead in the bottom of the third off a solo homerun from Garry Maynard (Oswego, Ill.) would put the Cougars on top, sitting with the one run lead until the bottom of the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars were able to secure runs off hits from Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.), Jaime Sandoval (Oak Lawn, Ill.), Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.),Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill), Kasikand Krater.
  • With the 7-1 lead, the Cougars looked to hold onto the lead and held the Stars tp three more runs on the game and with the tight Cougar defense, able to hold off and pick up the game one win against the Stars 8-6.
HIGHLIGHTS

GAME TWO
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Jacob hit two-for-five at the plate with one RBI while Cajigas hit three-for-five with two RBIs while only scoring once for the Cougars.
Westin Stutzman (Goshen, Ind.) delivered sevin innings on the mount for the Cougars as he picked up 11 strikeouts on 24 batters faced while only allowing four runs on four hits and holding off the Sabres a little bit longer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Stars strike first, the Cougars find themselves in a 2-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the first. With two runners on base after Jacob and Dorsch each make their way on, a double play gets both Dorsch and Maynard out on the plate and leaves Jacob on the bag over at left.
  • Tying things up, the Cougars fall behind yet again in the top of the second as the Stars pick up one run off a triple from shortstop John Tormey.
  • Looking to build back, the Cougars jump ahead once again off hits from Carter Gledhill (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Jacob would give the Cougars the lead -- a lead they wouldn't look back on.
  • With Stutzman continuing to work on the mound, the Cougars hold off the stars, not allowing another run in the game, closing things out 10-4 in game two.
HIGHLIGHTS
