Spartans Overcome Cougars Despite Second Game Spark

AURORA, ILL. – After a busy Saturday battling the elements, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars fell to the Aurora University Spartans in two games.

GAME ONE
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tyler Krater led the offense going three-for-three at the plate with one stolen base.
  • Garry Maynard picked up the only multi-base hit of the game after a leadoff triple would also score the only run for the Cougars on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tyler Dorsch got things going for the Cougars to jumpstart the offense in the top of the first after an infield single put him on first. Moments later a massive triple to right field from Maynard would get Dorsch moving and pick up the Cougars first run of the day.
  • With the Spartan offense ready to go to work, a five run bottom of the first would wreak havoc on the Cougars.
  • Needing to get out of an early four run deficit, the Cougars were unable to convert off the solo hit in the inning from Krater.
  • Wyatt McLaughlin continued to work on the bump for the Cougars and held the Spartans at five runs for another two innings before they would take flight again and extend their lead over the Cougars by nine.
  • As the Cougars continued to struggle at the plate, they'd see the close of the game after seven innings, falling to the Spartans 11-1.

GAME TWO
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Christian Jacob dominated game two for the Cougars after going three-for-five at the plate and pitching five innings.
  • Dorsch continued to work in game two going two-for-four at the plate with three RBIs and one homerun.
  • Krater drove in two RBIs himself while going one-for-four at the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite picking up a hit early in the top of the first inning, the Cougars were unable to get anything else going and remained scoreless after the first three outs of the game. Much like the start of game one against the Spartans, the Cougars fell behind 5-0 after the first inning.
  • Struggling to get the bats going things were finally able to start clicking after a double to center from Jacob would get a runner in scoring position. As Dorsch and Michael Kasik both found their way on base, a bases loaded situation for Krater would score two runs after the sophomore dropped a ball in left center.
  • Keeping the momentum with the Cougars, a quick three batter inning in the field would hand things back to the Cougar offense.
  • Back-to-back walks to start the inning, the Cougars had two runners on base while a successful bunt from Elijah Hickman would load the bases up. A through the right side would clear the bases and get Dorsch on third. With a single through the left side from Maynard that sent Dorsch home, the Cougars took their first lead of the day.
  • As the Spartans tied things back up in the bottom of the fifth, a two run homerun from Dorsch would push the Cougars back ahead.
  • A big bottom of the sixth for the Spartans would give them the three run advantage with the Cougars still hungry at the plate. Working slow and steady, the Cougars got two runners on base as Carter Gledhill and Sandoval sat on the corner bags. A ball hit to the left side of the field would give Gledhill the chance to cross the plate and cut the deficit down to two.
  • Unable to pick up any more runs, the Cougars would fall 15-9 to the Spartans.
