NAPERVILLE, ILL.. -- Taking a brief pause in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took on the North Central College Cardinals, falling 5-1.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.) brought in the lone run of the day off a solo homerun in the eighth inning while going one-for-three at the plate.
- Christian Jacob (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) were the only other Cougars to record hits on the day, each picking up one.
- Six Cougars took the mound today as Sammy Valdez (Plainfield, Ill.) got his first career start.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Struggling at the plate from the start, a quick three up, three down for the Cougars sent them to play defense where they were able to hold the Cardinals scoreless.
- A similar tale in the second inning as the first, the Cougars remained scoreless while being forced to the field. Unlike the first inning, the Cardinals would be able to pick up one run following back-to-back hits that would give them the 1-0 lead.
- Entering their third consecutive inning with only three batters at the plate, the Cougars couldn't get out of their slump and allowed the Cardinals to pick up another three runs.
- With freshman Tyler Pritchard (Manhattan, Ill.) on the mound, the Cougars held the Cardinals stagnant for two innings before a triple in the bottom of the sixth would allow the Cardinals to pick up their final run of the game, taking a 5-0 lead over the Cougars.
- Needing to get something going offensively, a solo homerun from Cajigas in the top of the eighth would get things started. Picking up that momentum in the top of the ninth, two Cougars would find their way on base before an infield fly from Garry Maynard (Oswego, Ill.) would advance the runners and put two in scoring position. Unable to convert, leaving two runners on base, the Cougars fell 5-1.
