Early Energy Not Enough For Cougars

VERONA, WIS. — Traveling to Wisconsin today for a doubleheader of lacrosse action, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's lacrosse team hit the turf first. Taking on Edgewood College, the Cougars would fight back-and-forth and lose the lead to the Eagles with a final score of 13-10.

Inside The Box Score:

  • Both picking up hat tricks in this game were Kelli Pietrowski (Wheeling, Ill.) with four goals and Rylee Orenstein (Walnut Creek, Calif.) with three goals

  • Also having a multi-goal game was Jessica Parker (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) who had two

  • Brynn Beetow (Buffalo, N.Y.) had two assists to lead the team in this category

  • Ryan McGee (Chicago, Ill.) had a total of ten saves in the net for the Cougars

To start off the first quarter, the Cougars were bringing the energy to Wisconsin. Beetow gave way to Parker and allowed her to score the first goal of the game to go up 1-0. Both teams would trade off shots before Orenstein caused a turnover and gave CUC an extra push. This led to Orenstein sneaking in an unassisted goal and brought the Cougar lead to 2-0. After the next draw control, Pietrowski drew a foul for a free position attempt and rushed in another Cougar goal, 3-0.

Edgewood was not going to go down easy, as they scored back-to-back goals off of the draw control and started to chip away 3-2. Orenstein responded immediately with another unassisted goal and doubled their lead 4-2. The Eagles would pull off one more shot and goal before going into the second quarter 4-3.

Quickly stealing the lead from the Cougars, the Eagles would score two more goals off of CUC turnovers and take the lead 5-4. However, CUC would capitalize off of Edgewood mistakes and tie the game up 5-5, thanks to a Pietrowski goal from Parker. Then, another goal would be scored by Parker in a free position attempt 6-5.

Right after Parker's free position goal, the Eagles evened it up at six apiece. However, Orenstein shot off one more to have the Cougars in front at the half 7-6.

The third quarter was dominated by Edgewood as they went on a six-goal rally and had the lead in hand 12-7. Before the end of the third, Orenstein would win the draw control and pass it off to Pietrowski for another goal 12-8.

Pietrowski and Beetow would both score one additional goal each, but it would be too late for a Cougar comeback. CUC was defeated by Edgewood with a final score of 13-10.

The Cougars will play host to Aurora University on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. draw. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
