RIVER FOREST, ILL. -- The Concordia University Chicago baseball team took to the Thunderdome for the first time in the 2023 season on a rainy day in Chicago. In what was originally supposed to be a road contest resulting in the Cougars batting first on their home field, they took the opportunity to bump their home opener up by a day and capitalized on the home field advantage, picking up the sweep on the day and starting out Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play 2-0.
Game One
INSIDE THE BOX
-
Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.)Â led the Cougar offense while hitting three-for-four in the game while picking up eight RBIs including a grand slam.
-
Jaime Sandoval (Oak Lawn, Ill.) followed behind while going two-for-three.
-
Christian Jacob (Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up two hits in the game -Â both multi-base hits with a double and a triple.
-
Freshman Tyler Pritchard (Manhattan, Ill.)Â picked up his first win in the maroon and gold after pitching four innings and picking up three strikeouts.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
A leadoff double to centerfield from Jacob followed by a single through the right side from Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) would put the Cougars up 1-0 almost instantly. Continuing to build off the momentum from the start, Kasik would pick up his first home run of the day, sending a ball over the right field fence and bringing in two runs to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.Â
-
In the top of the second, Kasik would continue to swing the bat, sending a long ball to center for a double and sending two more runs home, giving the Cougars a 5-1 lead.
-
The Green Knights would tie things up in the bottom of the second and jump to a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the third that they'd hold onto until the top of the eighth.
-
With a bases loaded opportunity, Kasik continued to have himself a day and sent a grand slam over the left center fence to rocket the Cougars ahead of the Green Knights while picking up his eighth RBI on the day thus far.Â
-
With bases loaded once again, a double to right center from Elijah Hickman would send all three baserunners home and put the Cougars ahead 13-6, which would be the final line of the game.

Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-

-
In the top of the fifth, a single through the left side from Mahler would send a run home and put the Cougars up by one.Â
-

-
Needing to build more of a comfort lead, the Cougars stepped up in the top of the eighth with a single through the right side from Maynard jumpstarting the offense once again and sending Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) home. A double from Hickman out to deep center field would send another run in while a double from Jacob would add another. With the four-run lead starting to look a little more promising, Kasik stepped up to the plate with another bases loaded opportunity and took advantage of it. Yet another grand slam out to center would bring in four more runs and give the Cougars the 11-3 lead while giving Kasik his 12th RBI of the day.Â
-
Three more hits in the top of the ninth adding another four runs, would secure the Cougars the 15-5 win.Â

WHAT COACH KOLIN CONNER HAD TO SAY
"We love getting to play at home and we were pleased that St. Norbert was willing to come play at our place. NACC season is always a thrill. The Thunderdome is one of the best places in the league to play. We had a few things as a team that we still needed to find a way to execute. Today we had an opportunity to do those things again, so I was please with how we handled it,"
"Our starting pitcher battled through. Tyler Pritchard was phenomenal out of the pen. Offensively we were able to tack on some runs in spots where we needed them. We have been huge on setting the tone, holding it, and finishing. Today we did that."
Â
The Cougars face a quick turnaround as they play back at the Thunderdome tomorrow, April 2nd, with a noon first pitch as they take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage while updates can be found on Twitter or Instagram @cucbaseball.Â
