Â
With the hot sun already shining down, the Cougars got underway with Chandler Kerr (Lockport, Ill.) on the mound. Only facing three batters in the top of the first inning, the Cougars found their turn at the plate rather quickly. With Christian Jacob (Scottsdale, Ariz.) making his way to first off a walk, he put himself in scoring position after a passed ball sent him running to second. A batter later, Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) would send a shot through the right side and send Jacob home.Â
Â
The Cougars were able to hold the lead for the entirety of the second inning before the Beavers were able to grab a run before the Cougars ended the inning off a double play. Sitting stagnant for another inning and a half, the Beavers found their groove and managed to put up four runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking the lead that they would be able to hold onto for the remainder of the game. With a new arm on the bump for the Cougars, the Beavers continued to swing strong and eventually jumped out to a six-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Despite a single through the left side for third basemen Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) and back-to-back free bases for CUC, they were unable to convert into runs and sat in their deficit.
Â
In the top of the eight, the Beavers built up their lead to 12-1 and left the Cougars scratching for runs as they headed into the bottom of the eighth. With a leadoff double from Kasik followed by a single to the right field corner from Dorsch would put the Cougars in scoring position. Nick Rensberger (Milford, Ind.) stepped in to pinch run for Kasik and on a single up the middle from Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) both Rensberger and Dorsch would cross the plate and give the Cougars a little jolt of energy late in the game.
Â
Unable to convert in the remainder of the game, the Cougars fell to the Beavers 15-3. The Cougars take on Illinois College Tuesday, March 7th at 9:00am EST. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.Â
