Concordia-Chicago Dominates Illinois College

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – For the fourth consecutive day, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took the field in the Sunshine State where they defeated Illinois College 20-9.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) led the bats for the Cougars, both going four-for-six with three and two RBIs, respectively.
  • Garry Maynard (Oswego, Ill.) made his return known as he drove in the lone homerun of the game off a fifth inning grand slam that would give the Cougars the lead in which they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
  • Christian Jacob (Scottsdale, Ariz.) went three-for-five at the plate with one RBI.
With the Cougars at the plate first, they were able to get on the scoreboard early after a hit to the shortstop from Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.) would send Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) across the plate. Picking up one run in the top of the first, the Cougars looked to junior pitcher Aidan Teahan (Park Ridge, Ill.)to get to work on the bump. Giving up a run to the Blueboys, the game locked up at one apiece for the next two innings.

In the bottom of the third, Illinois College was able to grab three runs and steal the lead after back-to-back hits for the Blueboys drove in some runs.

Needing to build off the work Teahan was doing on the mound, the bats got hot after back-to-back hits from Jacob and Cajigas put runners on second and third. With a hit from Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) toward first base, Jacob was able to cross the plate and get Cajigas to third. After Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) took a walk to first, it left the bases loaded with senior Garry Maynard at the plate. A few pitches in, Maynard picked his ball and drove it to the left center fence and brought in four runs for the Cougars.

With a less than comfortable lead, the Cougars took back to the defensive side and the Blueboys brought the game back within one. Teahan got the Cougars out of a jam after forcing an out in the infield and grabbing a strikeout to close the inning.

Back with their bats, the Cougars jumped out in the top of the seventh with intensity. Six consecutive singles from Jacob, Cajigas, Kasik, Dorsch, Maynard, and Mahler would bring the Cougars up to a five run lead. After Krater sailed a ball to centerfield, the Cougars would continue their runs as he secured one RBI. One batter later, Jaime Sandoval (Oak Lawn, Ill.) would drop a ball to centerfield and drive in two RBIs. Running it back one more time, a single to right field from Jacob would send Sandoval home and bring the Cougars up to a 14-5 lead.

Still dominating on the defensive end, freshman Eliot Higgins (Park Ridge, Ill.) took to the mound where he kept the bottom of the seventh a quick one and didn't allow any runs. The Cougars in turn put up an additional two runs in the top of the eighth before going on drive things home in the top of the ninth. Hits from Mahler, Krater, and Hickman would run the Cougars up to 20 runs, ultimately taking down the Blueboys 20-9.

The Cougars take the day off on Wednesday and will be back in action on Thursday, March 9th with a 9:45am EST first pitch against Fontbonne University. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
