Rock Island, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-0 NACC) picked up their first win of the season with a 9-8 double-overtime win at Augustana College (2-2, 0-0 CCIW) on Saturday afternoon.
Inside the Box Score
- Kelli Pietrowski (Wheeling, Ill.) had a career-high five goals, including three in the first quarter to lead the Cougars offense.
- Goalie Ryan McGee (Chicago, Ill.) had a season-high 16 saves.
- Brynn Beetow (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season in overtime to win it for the Cougars.
The Cougars fell behind early as the Vikings converted on a free position goal to go ahead 1-0. It would not take long for Pietrowski to get started as she scored three straight goals to put CUC up 3-1 with just under 5:00 to play in the first period.
Unfortunately, the Vikings closed out the period with two goals of their own to tie it.
In the second period, the Cougars were able to get some offense from elsewhere as
Kate Johnson (Lincoln, Neb.) scored her second of the season to put them ahead 4-3. After the Vikings tied it again,
Jessica Parker (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) was able to find the back of the net for the first time of the day to take the lead back.
A couple of saves from McGee would hold the lead for the Cougars and allowed for Pietrowski to break free and put another one in the net. The Cougars were up 6-4 headed into halftime.
The third period saw seven shots for the Cougars, but none were able to find the back of the net. The Vikings were able to cut the deficit in half and they went into the fourth period down 5-6.
Very early into the fourth period Augustana was able to score the equalizer on a player-up free position shot. But like the first period, Pietrowski was able to answer back with her fifth goal of the day and give CUC the lead at 7-6.
Augustana was able to tie it again before Parker scored her second of the day to take the lead once more. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Vikings were able to even the score with 2:32 in the fourth period. The score was stuck at 8-8 to end the fourth period and the teams headed to overtime.
The first overtime period did not see much action for anyone, with no shots on goal and forced a second overtime period.
The second overtime period started much of the same, with neither team able to get much going until Beetow was able to find some space to score her first goal of the season and seal the win for the Cougars.
The Cougars are back at home on Wednesday, March 22 when they host Illinois Wesleyan University with first draw coming at 4:00 p.m. All coverage for CUC women's lacrosse can be found at cucougars.com.
