River Forest, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's lacrosse team (0-1, 0-0 NACC) opened up their 2023 season at Concordia Stadium on Sunday as they fell to Saint Mary's College (IN) (1-0, 0-0 MIAA) 15-9.
Inside the Box
- Five Cougars found the back of the net, including Kelli Pietrowski (Wheeling, Ill.) who scored two goals on three shots.
- Ryan McGee (Chicago, Ill.) made 10 saves and picked up four ground balls.
- Senior Chloe Schaafsma (Lockport, Ill.) netted her first career goal.
The Cougars jumped out ahead early in the first quarter as
Jessica Parker (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) netted the team's first goal of the season.
The Belles quickly responded and tied it up less than 30 seconds later. Unfortunately for CUC, the Saint Mary's offense was just getting started as they scored six goals in the first quarter.
Nina Naes (St. Louis, Mo.) was able to grab one more for the Cougars and they ended the first quarter down 6-2.
Pietrowski started the second quarter off with a quick goal to bring the Cougars back within three. Again, the Belles answered as they scored three more of their own before Pietrowski was able to net her second of the day with this turnaround shot.
The Cougars looked to be getting some momentum as
Rylee Orenstein (Walnut Creek, Calif.) got her first of the season with this goal on the free position attempt. However, the Belles scored another one soon after and they went to the half up 10-5.
The third quarter was all Belles, as the Cougars were only able to get one shot off in the quarter. McGee made four saves as Saint Mary's kept the pressure on to start the second half.
The fourth quarter saw some more chances for the Cougars as they fought to cut the Belles lead. Late in the quarter, Schaafsma was able to take it down the field herself and finish the play for her first career goal. That would be the only goal of the half for the Cougars, as they dropped the season opener 15-6.
The Cougars next game is on Saturday, March 4 as they will travel to Monmouth College for a 12:00 draw. Coverage for that and all things CUC women's lacrosse can be found at
