MEQUON, WIS. – Following a quick turnaround from their match yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took the floor against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, ultimately falling 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Freshman Elijah Mosher (Clayton, Ohio) set a career-high with 14 digs while contributing 31 assists.
- Tyler Holubek (New Lenox, Ill.) led on both the offensive and defensive side with 17 kills and four blocks.
SET ONE
Getting underway on their second consecutive day of conference matches the Cougars started off falling behind 0-1 before a kill from
Luke Vozenilek (Westmont, Ill.) evened things up. Going point-for-point for the next few points until an ace from senior
Colby Campbell (Brookfield, Ill.) broke things up and gave the Cougars their first lead of the match. Another monster kill from Holubek would keep the cougars on top and jumpstart their run that would eventually put them up by a set-high three points.
As the set progressed, Vozenilek and Holubek refused to back down and combined for seven of the team's final eight points in the set, claiming set one 25-22.
SET TWO
With their first points of the set coming from Mosher, the Cougars quickly fell behind after letting the Falcons go on a 4-0 run. Junior
David Vales (Oak Forest, Ill.) stepped up and picked up his first kill of the day, bringing the Cougars within two. Unable to defend the Falcons' swings, the Cougars fell behind ten points and were unable to dig their way back.
SET THREE
With some new faces seeing the court in set three, the Cougars took a 2-1 lead before falling back into the back-and-forth routine with the Falcons. A string of service errors from both sides left the Cougars trailing by two before a big time kill from Vozenilek brought the Cougars back within one.
A kill from
Tavarus Davis-Williams (Fox Lake, Ill.) put the Cougars up 19-17 while two back-to-back kills from Vozenilek kept the advantage for the Cougars.
The Cougars weren't able to hold off some big swings from the Falcons and ultimately fell 26-24.
SET FOUR
With the pressure of being down 2-1 creeping up, the Cougars jumped out right away with back-to-back kills from Mosher. A 6-0 run led charge by a kill and a block from Davis-Williams put the Cougars up 8-4.
Struggling to find their groove again, the Cougars fell behind by as much as six points before fighting back to a two point deficit. Ultimately, the Cougars fell in the final set 25-20.
Falling to the Falcons 3-1, the Cougars drop to 1-1 in conference and 2-6 overall. Their next match will bring them back to the home court for the Cougar Classic Tri set for February 25
