Cougars Defeated By Muskies Despite Late Rally

PLYMOUTH, WIS. — The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team traveled to Lakeland University to take on the Muskies. In this evening game, the Cougars and the Muskies faced off, but CUC fell in this match with a score of 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Katie Stonich (Sadieville, Ky.) and Grace Heywood (Northbrook, Ill.) led the offense with nine kills each.

  • With 11 digs in total, Julia Beers (Mishawaka, Ind.) continues to be the dig leader overall.

  • Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.) held a staggering 24 assists on the night

A consistent back and forth of points started off the first set. As the Cougars and Muskies battled,  it was not until the late rally of points for Lakeland that led them to a lead of 18-9. With a large lead intact, there was pressure for CUC to find a way back into this game. Heywood was able to find some room and help bring the game into reach. It would not matter, as Lakeland takes the first set 25-15.

Coming back with a vengeance, Concordia swung their way through the second set and started off on a 5-2 run. Stonich continued to be a huge arm for the Cougars as they progressed through the set. Eve Dicken (St. Louis, Mo.) and McKayla LeVoy (Kankakee, Ill.) were able to team up and offer up a couple of big time blocks and push the score to 17-13. However, the Muskies battled back and tied up the game at 19 apiece. A couple of big time swings from Levoy and Stonich were not enough to secure the win, and they fell 27-25 in the second set.

With their backs against the wall, it was important for the Cougars to find some momentum. Kills from Stonch, Levoy, and Heywood would keep them in the game and within one at almost every moment of the third set. Concordia was clearly bringing the fight as they pushed for their first set win of the match. The battle would be lost in the end as Lakeland wins set three with a score of 25-22. This gives Lakeland the win over Concordia University Chicago with a score of 3-0.

Saturday, the Cougars will travel to their sister school, Concordia University Wisconsin, to take on the Eagles at 12 p.m. Coverage for all of our sports can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
