Set Win Not Enough To Defeat Falcons

MEQUON, WIS. — The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team traveled to their sister school today to take on Concordia University Wisconsin. After the Cougars took a set in the match, they fell to the Falcons with a final score of 3-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

Starting this mid-day game, the Cougars made their travel up north to take on the Falcons in a 12 p.m. matchup. An early lead was made after Katie Stonich (Sadieville, Ky.) was able to get a kill in and make it 3-1. In response, CUW made a quick succession of points and took the lead back 9-4. Heywood continued to push the points back for the Cougars with a couple of kills. It would end up being too late as the Falcons won set one with a score of 25-16.

Moving into set two, both teams battled back and forth in the first couple of points, up until a score of 10-12, in favor of the Falcons. A huge swing of momentum from the Cougars will bring them back into the lead 14-12. Capitalized by Stonich and Katie Schrems (South Bend, Ind.), this began another rally of points for CUC. Making the score 20-15, Lili Hunt (Greenfield, Ind.) makes a big kill to hone in on the set win. This set is won with a score of 25-16, tying up the set points for both teams.

Stakes were high going into set three, this continued until a score of 11-9 with the Falcons out in front. They continued on this energized approach as Kovachevich came in with a big service ace for the Cougars. This would not be enough, as they fell 25-15 in set three.

With their backs against the wall, it was up to CUC to find some room and tie up the set points. However, CUW took their opportunity off of a couple of attack errors and ended up breaking away with a score of 11-5. Stonich and Heywood both responded with big swings of their own to bring the Cougars within three. A big run started with a couple of service aces from Kovachevich and another smack down from Hunt, tied it all up with 15 apiece. However, the Falcons made their response with a rally of points of their own before the Cougars could really get another handle on the game, ending with a loss of 25-20. This leads with Concordia University Wisconsin taking the win with an overall score of 3-1.
