Cougars Fall 2-1 to Spartans Despite Early Goal

RIVER FOREST, Ill. --- The Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team (0-3-3) hosted Aurora University (1-3-3) Wednesday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup. After scoring the first goal, the Cougars couldn't contain the Spartans, and lost 2-1.

Inside the Box Score
  • Meagan Wilkinson-McQuaid (Georgetown, Ky.) scored CUC's only goal. She now has two on the season.
  • CUC's 14 shots are the most in a game this season.
  • Jordyn Gosell (Antioch, Ill.) and Wilkinson-McQuaid had three shots each, which was a team high.
The Cougars came out on the attack to start the match. It didn't take long for CUC to find the back of the net with a goal in the 3rd minute by Meagan Wilkinson-McQuaid (Georgetown, Ky.). Wilkinson-McQuaid's second goal of the season came on a misplayed ball by goalkeeper Kelsey Deck near the top of the box. With an early lead of 1-0, CUC seemed to have control of the game.

Aurora responded in the 16th minute with their first goal of the match. Jessica Mirsky passed the ball from 50 yards out to Lauren Bliefernicht for her first goal of the season. The score would remain 1-1 until halftime.

The beginning of the second half included a lot of play in the middle of the pitch. CUC pushed the tempo with great scoring opportunities by Jordyn Gosell (Antioch, Ill.) and Britani Chansler (Naples, Fla.) in the middle of the half. The Cougars outshot the Spartans 11-6 in the half, but failed to find the back of the goal.

The tie was broken in the 75th minute by Aurora's Emma Dyer. Abby Kay played a ball down the side, and passed it up to Dyer in the box to give Aurora the 2-1 lead.

CUC had one final chance with time running out in the 83rd minute. Medelin Loza (Cicero, Ill.) dropped the ball inside the box on a free kick from 20 yards out. Wilkinson-McQuaid's shot hit of top of the crossbar and nearly tied the game. CUC would not have another scoring opportunity, and fell to the Spartans 2-1.

The Cougars are back at home Saturday, September 24th against St. Norbert College for another NACC contest. The match is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. kickoff. Coverage of the game, and everything CUC women's soccer can be found at cucougars.com.
