DE PERE, Wis. The Concordia Chicago men's volleyball team (4-11,3-2) took a trip up north to De Pere, Wisconsin for a Friday night matchup against the Green Knights of St. Norbert College (4-8,1-4). Hunting for their second straight victory, the Cougars came away with a 3-0 match sweep. The night also featured a record-setting performance by junior
Colby Campbell (Brookfield, Ill.), who set the CUC record for total blocks in a single season.
Inside the Box Score
- Campbell recorded five total blocks, tying and breaking the single season total block record for Concordia. The junior has recorded 46 total blocks this season, breaking the previous record of 44 set by Ryan Felbinger in 2019.
- Junior Luke Vozenilek (Westmont, Ill.) tied for the match lead in kills with 10. Vozenilek did lead the night in points with 12.
- Junior Matthew Lams (Brookfield, Ill.) had a career night, putting up personal highs of seven kills and three total blocks.
Set one started off tight. St. Norbert was able to build a 2-1 lead off a Campbell attack error, but CUC responded quickly with a hard Vozenilek kill.
The Green Knights eventually retook the lead 6-5 after a Cougar attack error off of Lams. An SNC attack error and service error would put the Cougars back in the driver's seat, before a
David Vales (Oak Forest, Ill.) service ace put CUC up two.
Concordia would then use an 8-4 run to build a six-point lead, 16-10. The Green Knights pulled back within four, 19-15, but five unanswered points would put the Cougars within one of a set victory.
St. Norbert scored back-to-back points to stay alive a little longer in set one, but a Lams kill sealed a 25-17 set one victory for CUC.
Looking to even the match-up, the Green Knights kicked off set two with a 3-0 lead. The Cougars kept clawing their way back into the set, trailing by only one at multiple points, including 5-4 after a
Ricardo Ruiz (Lynwood, Ill.) kill.
CUC finally tied the set up at 10 points apiece after a Campbell service ace. Campbell dished out another ace on the very next play, giving Concordia their first lead of the set, 11-10.
David Vales then joined in on the service ace action, with his giving the Cougars a 14-12 lead, the first multi-point lead of the set for CUC.
The dueling teams traded blows for the rest of the set. Key plays like a Vozenilek kill for the Cougars' 19th point would help run Concordia's total up to 24.
A Vozenilek attack error would prolong the set a bit, but one final Lams kill clinched the second set for CUC, giving them a commanding 2-0 set lead heading into a possible game-deciding third set.
The beginning of set three was more of the back-and-forth affair found in set two. Six ties were had to start, being found at the one, three, four, five, six, and seven-point mark. Campbell and
Tyler Holubek (New Lenox, Ill.) would break the 7-7 tie with a monster block, but SNC tied the set right back up at eight after an Owen Knezevich kill.
Once the Cougars broke the 8-8 tie though, they never looked back. A big 12-7 run put the score at 20-15 in favor of CUC, before Lams used a kill to kickstart a four-point swing bringing the Cougars one point away from a match sweep.
Concordia would get that sweep after an Eddie Pacula service error capped off a 25-17 set win for the Cougars. This three-set sweep continues the trend of CUC winning in three, for which they have done in all four of their season victories. The Cougars have now won six straight sets after their 3-0 win in their March 2nd match against Rockford University.
The Cougars now sit at 3-2 in the NACC, the first time they have sat above .500 in conference play since the 2020 season. The team now has a quick turnaround, as they travel to Marian University Saturday to take on the Sabres in another conference matchup. That match will start at 5 p.m., and coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
