Inside the Box
-
Luke Vozenilek (Westmont, Ill.) picked up 21 kills and eight digs on the night.
-
Tyler Holubek (New Lenox, Ill.) recorded 33 assists, four blocks, and two aces.
Setting the tone early in the match, the Cougars took an early lead following kills from Vozenilek, David Vales (Oak Forest, Ill.), and Virgilio Rodriguez (Cicero, Ill.). In a set of back and forth scoring, the Cougars found themselves making larger runs more frequently to give them the 25-17 triumph.
Much like the first set, the Cougars jumped out to 14-5 lead after a series of kills from Colby Campbell (Brookfield, Ill.), Vozenilek, and Holubek. Later in the set, the Comets made a returning run of six points, forcing a Cougar timeout. Fresh out of the timeout, Vozenilek shot one down the ten foot line to break the Comets's scoring streak. Going back and forth, the Cougars were able to come out on top, 25-22.
With the Comets coming out with vengeance, the Cougars went down 4-1. Fighting to get their momentum back, the Cougars tied things up at 5 a piece before jumping ahead 9-7, where they'd keep the lead for the remainder of the game. With a final score of 25-18, the Cougars had a clean sweep on the night taking their first win of the season.
With a quick turnaround, they'll be back in action tomorrow at Trine University at 1pm eastern time. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
