Cougars Momentum Not Enough To Defeat Muskies

PLYMOUTH, WIS. — The Concordia University Chicago football team had their first away game after a long string of home matches. Traveling to Lakeland, they took on the Muskies who were celebrating their Homecoming Weekend. The Cougars would ultimately fall to the Muskies after some second half action, 43-23.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

Starting off the game with a lot of energy in the air, it was clear that CUC was up to a challenge. Lakeland had the upper hand of having their Homecoming game and CUC came out swinging. It started off with a huge drive from the Cougars as they got the ball in their possession. Pratley was able to find Henson down field and supply a 30-yard pass for the touchdown and lead 6-0.

This seemed to light a fire for the Muskies as they quickly started moving the ball on their next possession. This led to a six-yard rushing touchdown for Lakeland to put them in the lead 7-6. The Cougars were not able to find any gain on their next possession, which gave the ball back to the Muskies. However, the Cougars defense supplied a huge blockage at the one-yard line to keep the opponent out of the endzone.

After a couple of CUC miscues, Lakeland was able to gain a bigger lead of 9-6. Martin Egbo (Williamsburg, Va.) decided to take matters into his own hands as he picked up the lone sack of the game. Entering the second quarter, Pratley was able to find Covington this time and gave CUC the lead again after a 29-yard touchdown.

However, it would not be for long, Lakeland struck back and gained a seven-yard touchdown to take the lead back 16-13. CUC ended up not making any push on their end and handed the ball back to Lakeland. With an opportunity in view, Charles Kirtley (Channelview, Texas) picked up his first interception of the season to give the momentum back to the Cougars.

After this momentum shift, the Muskies came back with some energy of their own and scored a one-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 23-13 in favor of Lakeland. Going into halftime, the Cougars had to be ready to come out and fight in the second half. Right out of the gate, CUC Kirtley was able to force a fumble as Brendon Baugh (Tamarac, Fla.) picked it up and put it right back into the Cougars hands. Ryan Auer (Newark, Ohio) was able to make good on his field goal from the 21-yard line and make the score 23-16 with Lakeland out in front.

Lakeland went on to find some open space for a 74-yard rushing touchdown and bring their lead up to 30-16. BJ Pitts (Waco, Texas) was able to force a fumble from the Muskies, but they stayed in control of the ball. The Muskies scored two more touchdowns, one an 18-yard pass and another an eight-yard rush to pull away at 43-16. Henson snuck in through the defense and scored another four-yard rushing touchdown to bring the score to 43-23 as a final. Lakeland defeats CUC with a final score of 43-23.

The Cougars stay on the road next Saturday as they face Wisconsin Lutheran for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Coverage for this game and all future Cougar football games can be found at cucougars.com/coverage while all things regarding this team can be found on Twitter @CUCFBFamily.
