RIVER FOREST, ILL. — The back half of a Wednesday soccer double-header was completed when the Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team (2-8-2, 1-5-2) welcomed the Moody Bible Institute Archers (0-10-0, 0-1-0) to River Forest. It turned into a record day for the Cougars, who dominated the Archers 10-0.
Inside the Box Score
-
A pair of Cougars had multi-goal days. Sophomore Garrett Poynter (Noblesville, Ind.) added goals number two and three on the season, while Oscar Montejano (Zion, Ill.) added two of his own.
-
Nicholas Pasut (New Boston, Mich.) and Kyle Schultz (Pingree Grove, Ill.) combined for the shutout, but were majorly helped by their defense, who did not allow a shot on goal.
-
The Cougars' offense poured on 64 shots. This sets the new record for most shots in a single game by Concordia, which previously sat at 38 from a 2004 game against Rockford.
-
Another record was set in the goal scoring department, as 10 goals is the most scored in a single game in CUC history. The previous record was nine goals against Rockford in 2003.
-
Eight Cougars recorded a goal on the day. Meanwhile, four CUC players netted their first career goal; Spencer Nicholson (Fort Collins, Colo.), Benjamin L'heureux (Champigny sur Marne, Val de Marne), Giuseppe Lazzara (Chicago, Ill.), and Miguel Salamanca (Chicago, Ill.)
The Cougars wasted no time putting pressure on the Archers. By the time the nine minute mark rolled around, CUC already had seven shots, three of which were saved by Moody Bible goalie Micah Pugh. Poynter was finally able to break through, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead with his goal at 9:24.
Now working with the lead, Concordia showed no signs of slowing down. The team put up another seven shots before Montejano snuck one past Pugh to grow CUC's lead to 2-0.
Isaiah Cox mustered up Moody Bible's first shot of the game at the 20:32 mark, but it did little to slow down the Cougar onslaught. Pugh did his best to weather the storm, but a costly foul from Shawn Murphy rewarded Concordia a penalty kick, which Michael Byron (Park Ridge, Ill.) had no problem converting on, putting his team up 3-0.
CUC could not find the back of the net before 45 minutes were up, sending the teams to the locker room with the Cougars leading 3-0.
The second half opened with Schultz in net for Concordia, and the offense was quick to provide the freshman with more breathing room.
Samuel Epperly (Elgin, Ill.) potted goal number one on the season just over two minutes into the second frame off a perfect assist from Montejano, bumping the score to 4-0.
Pugh kept getting challenged for the next 12 minutes until Montejano was able to put one in the back of the net for his second of the day and for CUC goal number five. Just five minutes later, Poynter joined Montejano in the two-goal club when his score put the Cougars up 6-0. Then, just over three minutes later, Nicholson scored the first goal of his career, increasing the lead to 7-0.
Moody Bible soon stabilized, slowing Concordia down and keeping them scoreless for the next 12 minutes. L'heureux stopped this drought, putting his first collegiate goal past Pugh at 78:30, making the score 8-0.
No more than three minutes later, Lazzara nabbed his first career goal. The freshman's score, which was number nine in the game for CUC, tied the school record for most goals in a game.
With less than three minutes to go and the single game goals record in sight, Salamanca got the Cougars there with the first goal of his young career, putting his team up 10-0 and breaking the nearly 20-year-old record.
As the final buzzer rang, Concordia stood victorious 10-0. This game was the third shutout on the season for CUC, as well as the team's second win in the past three games.
The team will be back in action this Saturday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Milwaukee to take on the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran College. Coverage for that match, as well as all things Concordia men's soccer, can be found at cucougars.com.
