Softball Rallies Come Up Short Against Rockford

Concordia University Chicago softball (3-14-1) welcomed the Regents of Rockford University (12-6) to River Forest for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Cougars were unable to come away with a victory on the day, losing 7-3 in game one before falling 12-3 in the second contest.

Game One
The Regents jumped on the board early with three runs across the first two innings. The Cougars got a run back in the third off an unearned run and had themselves within striking distance at the game's halfway point.

The fifth inning was a rough one for CUC, as Rockford scored four runs to put themselves back in the driver's seat. The Cougars showed fight in the sixth, however, with RBI hits from senior Nia DeGeorge (Omaha, Neb.) and freshman Gina Westphal (Elmhurst, Ill.) to cut the lead to 7-3.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, that would be as close as they would get, as scoring threats in the sixth and seventh came up just short.

It's the fifth straight game with an RBI for DeGeorge, and she is currently third on the team in that category. Seniors Karlee Knight (Lake Station, Ind.) and Kate Roberts (Pontiac, Ill.) combined for 2.3 scoreless innings in relief, surrendering just one hit between the two of them.

Game Two
The Regents again scored in the first inning of game two, but this time the Cougars had an immediate answer. Freshman Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.) drove home sophomore Becky Pieroni (Montgomery, Ill.) and the game was knotted at one.

Ultimately, the Cougars were unable to overcome big innings from Rockford. The Regents scored four in the third and sixth and another three in the seventh.

The team attempted a rally in the sixth, with three straight hits to open the inning from senior Sydney Sterrett (Lafayette, Ind.), Archuletta and DeGeorge. Archuletta's double scored Sterrett, and Archuletta eventually scored on an RBI groundout from junior Sydney Paulauskis-Lauher (Chatham, Ill.).

Knight was again excellent in relief, tossing another two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk.

The team has a quick turnaround, with a doubleheader on Monday on the road against these very same Regents. Game one is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., and coverage to the day's action will be available on the Rockford website.
