Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Kristen Keller, Director of Athletic Communications

Team effort gave women's volleyball first two wins of 2021 season

The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team grabbed two wins against Rockford University.

The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team (2-0) played for the first time in 491 days as they took on Rockford University (0-2) in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference double header. After the two matches of play, the Cougars found themselves with their first two wins of the season.

In the first, CUC came out strong and never let up their lead. They swept the Regents in three sets, winning 25-10, 25-14 and 25-20.

Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Henline (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the Cougars' offense with nine kills while only recording two errors. She also led the team's back row defensive efforts with 15 digs and two blocks.

Junior middle blocker Mikala Perino (DePere, Wis.) added to the offensive effort with six kills and two blocks. From the service line, junior libero Julia Beers (Mishawaka, Ind.) had a team-high five aces. She also contributed to the team's defense with nine digs.

The second set told a similar story for the Cougars. Although the Regents fought hard in all three, it didn't stop Concordia from sweeping them yet again with scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-22.

After her strong performance in the first match, Henline decided to do even more in the second, registering 18 kills while hitting .486 (1 error, 35 attempts). She rounded out the day with 10 digs, notching her first double-double of the year. Beers also had another great performance in the back row, registering 10 digs and another three service aces.

However, some of the biggest performances of the second match came from underclassmen. Freshman setter Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.) controlled the offense with 34 assists and snagged three aces. She also helped the defense with a team-high 12 digs and two blocks on her way to her first collegiate double-double. Sophomore Jaida Carr (Livermore, Calif.) also added to the team's defense with a team-high three blocks.

The Cougars will have the week off before getting back on the court Sunday, March 14 at Aurora. First serve will happen at 1 p.m. A link to the live stream can be found at the Aurora Athletics' website.
