The Concordia University Chicago baseball team (3-6) headed to Madison, Wis. as they made up their doubleheader against Edgewood College (4-9) today, March 29.
Â
In the first game of the series, the Cougars kicked off the scoring with a home run from senior
Brody Mariotti (Yorktown, Ind.) that also brought in sophomore
Garry Maynard (Oswego, Ill.). It didn't take long for the Eagles to start swinging as they scored nine runs in two innings. Although CUC fought back and tied Edgewood in the fourth, it wasn't enough to come out with a victory. The Eagles beat the Cougars 14-11.
Â
Leading Concordia in the first game were Mariotti and Maynard. Both players recorded three runs each to earn over half of the team's scoring. Four other Cougars made it to home plate in this game including
Michael Zavoli (Lake Barrington, Ill.),
Howie Hatton (North Riverside, Ill.),
Colton Wallace (Hampshire, Ill.) and
Aidan Donovan (Santee, Calif.). Maynard also contributed a team-high three RBIs.
Â
On the mound, senior
Cade Laudenschlager (Cave Creek, Ariz.) had the most success for the Cougars. He struck out eight batters and only allowed one walk as he finished out the last six innings for CUC.
Â
The second game of this doubleheader started similarly for the Cougars. Again, Mariotti brought Maynard in, but this time also grabbed Hatton to make the score 2-0 at the top of the first. However, the Eagles didn't let Concordia keep the lead for very long. They scored eight consecutive runs through the second inning, causing Concordia to trail heading into the third.
Â
That's when the Cougars gained some momentum. CUC ended up taking control of the game, registering nine runs in three innings. Although they grabbed the lead, Edgewood fought back. It came down to the bottom of the ninth, but the Eagles ended up defeating the Cougars 13-12.
Â
Hatton and Mariotti were key contributors to the Cougar offense in this game as they both recorded three runs. Also grabbing runs of their own were Maynard, Donovan,
Carter Gledhill (Arlington Heights, Ill.),
Matthew Uba (Darien, Ill.),
Elijah Hickman (Rennselaer, Ind.),
Niles Gall (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and
Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.). Mariotti also had the most RBIs on the team with four while Gledhill added two of his own.
Â
From the mound, freshman
Jack Rector (Peoria, Ariz.) struck out the most batters with eight. He only walked three runners in the 5.1 innings he pitched.
Â
The Cougars will have two days off before they are back on the field in River Forest again as they take on Marian University. This non-conference doubleheader will start at noon. A live stream will be available at youtube.com/cucsports. Â
