Box Score 2 Concordia Chicago baseball (4-7) split a doubleheader up at Lakeland University on Saturday, winning 15-6 in the first game before falling 10-5 late in game two.
Game One
The Cougars turned to their ace in game one and he delivered. Cole Carman (Littleton, Colo.) went the distance, striking out nine and allowing just three earned. It's the seniors third career complete game.
The red hot bats were once again on display during game one, with six different Cougars recording multiple hits. The majority of damage was done in the fifth inning, where CUC hung 11 runs on the Muskies.
Lakeland led 4-1 entering the fifth, but the floodgates quickly opened. Junior centerf ielder Niles Gall (Oak Lawn, Ill.) got things rolling with a one-out double before sophomore third baseman Caleb Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.) and freshman right fielder Aidan Donovan (Santee, Calif.) followed with back-to-back singles to flip the order back around to the top.
The team wreaked havoc on the base paths in the fifth, stealing three bases and advancing twice on wild pitches, including a run. They also showed great patience at the plate and drew four walks in the inning. With nine runs already across, junior Howie Hatton (North Riverside, Ill.) put an exclamation point on the frame with a two-RBI double that gave the team an eight-run lead.
In his second start of the season, Caleb Anderson was an impressive 4-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Gall also had an excellent day at the plate, going 3-4 with a double, two triples and two RBIs.
Game Two
The offense was a little quieter for the Cougars in game two than it had been in recent games. Still, they held a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning before the Muskies kicked their offense into gear and scored seven runs across their final two at bats.
Starting pitcher Chandler Kerr (Lockport, Ill.) put together a quality start for the Cougars in game two. The sophomore went 6.0 innings and allowed just three earned while striking out seven. Senior Cade Laudenschlager (Cave Creek Ariz.) struck out the side in his one inning of relief.
Anderson had yet another impressive showing in the night cap, going 4-5 for the second time on the day. Freshman Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) knocked in his first two career RBIs with a single in the fourth.
Other RBIs for CUC were provided by senior Brody Mariotti (Yorktown, Ill.), junior Matthew Uba (Darien, Ill.) and sophomore Carter Gledhill (Arlington Heights, Ill.).
The Cougars will be off on Sunday before welcoming Marian University to the Thunderdome for a doubleheader on Monday. Game one is set to begin at noon, with a stream available on the
