Cougars Break out Brooms Against MSOE

Sweep! Concordia University Chicago baseball (3-4) took both games of Wednesday's doubleheader from the Eagles of MSOE (0-4) by final scores of 16-5 and 16-8.

The Cougars had an impressive offensive showing in both games, exploding for five-run innings on three separate occasions. They scored in several different ways, flexing power and speed, and have now produced double-digits runs in four of their seven games.

Game One
MSOE had a hot start to the day, posting a three-spot in their first at-bat in game one. Starter Cole Carman (Littleton, Colo.) settled down after that, however, allowing just two more runs over six innings of work on his way to the victory. The senior struck out five and walked just one during his time on the bump.

The Cougars entered the bottom of the sixth trailing 5-3, but an outburst of eight runs quickly changed that. Junior Matthew Uba (Darien, Ill.) knocked in the first run of the inning with an RBI single and later put a bow on the inning with a two-run triple.

The highlight of the sixth inning was a two-run home run by junior Michael Zavoli (Lake Barrington, Ill.). The only other Cougar home run came off the bat of Howie Hatton (North Riverside, Ill.) in the bottom of the eighth. The junior's long ball brought home three runs, extending the Cougar lead to 11 and ending the game.

Game Two
The Cougars struck first in game two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first courtesy of senior Brody Mariotti's (Yorktown, Ind.) fourth home run of the season.

They continued to pile on runs early, with RBI doubles from Uba and Zavoli in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Starting pitcher Chandler Kerr (Lockport, Ill.) kept the Eagles off the board for the first four innings before allowing a four-spot in the fifth. The sophomore struck out four over his five innings of work on the way to his first collegiate victory.

The Eagles eventually cut the Cougar lead to 6-5 in the top half of the seventh, but CUC hung five runs right back on them in the bottom half, as well as five more in the eighth, to round out their dominant day at the dish.

Junior Mike Tobin (Hickory Hills, Ill.) shut things down in the ninth with a quick 1-2-3 inning to seal the sweep for CUC.

Top Cougars (Combined)

Despite all of the offense, the most crazy occurrence of the afternoon was sophomore Gary Maynard (Oswego, Ill.) getting hit by a pitch SIX different times.

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Madison, Wis. to take on Edgewood college. The doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m. and a stream to the action will be available on the Edgewood athletics website.
