Women's volleyball sweeps Eagles in double header

The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team won two sets against Benedictine.

The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team (4-2) was back in action today, March 21, as they hosted the Benedictine University Eagles (0-4). Concordia played a double header against the Eagles, and saw great results. The Cougars pulled out 3-2 and 3-1 wins over Benedictine in the matches.

Both teams fought hard during the first match. In all five sets, the two teams battled back and forth for points, resulting in very close scores. The Cougars ultimately grabbed the win with scores of 25-22, 25-27, 25-21, 17-25 and 18-16.

Leading the Cougars in this set was sophomore Alyssa Henline (Fort Wayne, Ind.). The outside hitter recorded 20 kills in the match while also registering an impressive four blocks. Also helping the offensive line during this game were senior Lily Goldstein (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman Katie Stonich (Sadieville, Ky.). Goldstein grabbed 15 kills while Stonich added 11 of her own. Freshman Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.) controlled the offense in the front row with 43 assists.

In the back row, junior libero Julia Beers (Mishawaka, Ind.) led the defense with 28 digs, which is the most she recorded this season. Henline and freshman Sophie Kovachevich each contributed nine digs of their own. Leading the defense in the front row was junior Mikala Perino (Depere, Wis.), who notched eight blocks.

Shortly after the first match ended, the two teams went into the second. The Cougars carried over their momentum from the first match and used it to their advantage. They took control early by winning the first set. Although the Eagles came back to win the second, that didn't stop CUC. They ended up winning the remaining two to close out the match and finish the weekend 2-0 with scores of 27-25, 16-25, 25-19 and 25-21.

On offense, the Cougars were led again by Henline. This time, she registered 18 kills from the pin to help with the 3-1 win. Vernengo worked to spread the offense out in this match as she worked her way to 42 assists. In the back row, Beers led the team again, this time with 19 digs. Kovachevich added another 11 to the team's impressive defensive performance. Perino also led the team in blocks again during this match with three.

The Cougars will have three days off before they are back in action again, this time traveling down the street to take on Dominican University. The Division Street Rivalry will begin at 5 p.m.
