Freshmen lead women's volleyball against Stars

The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team lost 3-0 to Dominican University.

The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team (4-3) was back in action today, March 25, as they traveled down the road to Dominican University (7-1) for a single match. After three sets, the Cougars found themselves with a loss in the Division Street Rivalry as they were swept 3-0.

In tonight's match, CUC was unable to get in a rhythm. The first set started with the Stars in control, and the Cougars did not take the lead at any point in this set, which resulted with a score of 25-17. However, the Cougars grabbed the early lead in the second. Although they started on top, they were unable to close out the set as the Stars won 25-20. The third and final set told a similar story as the first, where Dominican got ahead early and didn't let up. This ultimately ended with a 25-16 loss for CUC.

Leading the Cougars on offense was freshman Katie Stonich (Sadieville, Ky.). The outside hitter had seven kills on the night, only recording one error. Controlling the offense as always was freshman Isabelle Vernengo (Plainfield, Ind.), who added 21 assists to the box score.

On defense, senior Alexa Lomantini (St. Louis, Mo.) secured the most digs for CUC with eight. Junior Mikala Perino (Depere, Wis.) also helped in the front row with two blocks.

The Cougars will have eight days off before they are back on the court against the Stars in Geiseman Gymnasium on Saturday, April 3. This doubleheader will kick off with the first serve at 11 a.m. Live coverage of the game can be found at youtube.com/cucsports.
