Cougars split with Falcons in first home series

CUC wins 1 in first home series

Concordia University Chicago (2-8) softball took their home field for the first time in 738 days to take on Concordia University Wisconsin (4-2) in a doubleheader match-up.

Game 1:
CUW took an early lead scoring four runs in the first inning off of sophomore pitcher Hailey Howard (Machesney Park, Ill.).  CUC matched CUW in the third inning with one run each, leaving the score 5-1. In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore shortstop Becky Pieroni (Montgomery, Ill.) smashed her first homerun of the day into right center, bringing the score to 5-2. Heading into the fifth inning, CUW scored off an RBI, but the Cougars matched with a run from Pieroni to start closing the gap.  Heading into the bottom of the seventh, senior outfielder Isabel Ortiz (Homer Glen, Ill.) stole home on a throwing error leaving the game to end 6-4 while Howard ended the game giving up six hits with three strikeouts.

Game 2:
Starting game two on the mound for the Cougars was junior Holly Bathje (Davis Junction, Ill.) who held the Falcons without any runs for three innings while the Cougar offense took an early lead.  In the bottom of the first, multiple Cougars found themselves on base with hits coming from senior outfielder Nia DeGeorge (Omaha, Neb.), freshman infielders Annabella Archuletta (Pueblo, Colo.), and Carole Ross (Whittier, Calif).  As the Cougars continued to dominate on offense, DeGeorge and Ross both scored, giving them the 2-0 advantage. Keeping their drive alive in the second inning, Pieroni sent her second home run of the day through right field, scoring with senior outfielder Sydney Sterrett to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead.  In the fourth inning the Falcons were able to sneak a run in off of a sac fly, giving them their only run of the game. With Bathje still hot on the mound, she was able to close the game off with five total hits give up, and two strikeouts

The Cougars will be back this Wednesday with another home double header against MSOE starting at 3:00 p.m.
