The Concordia University Chicago track and field teams had various members of their men's and women's teams selected to compete in the DIII Elite Championships hosted by Wartburg College on March 12 and 13.
Â
The Knights created this indoor meet after the NCAA announced the cancellation of its national championship for indoor track and field. Only the top student-athletes from the country were invited to partake in this meet in their particular event. For CUC, there were four individuals and one relay team selected to attend this high-caliber meet.
Â
The first athlete to kick competition off for the Cougars was junior
Gustavo Alvarez (Chicago, Ill.). The pole vaulter was one of nine athletes in this event, and he finished in first place. He cleared the winning jump on his first attempt with a height of 4.76 meters. This was good enough to break his own school record along with the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference record.
Â
Also grabbing a gold medal during this meet was senior
Kayla Armstrong (Chicago, Ill.). The sprinter won the 200-meter dash on her way to a school and NACC record with a time of 25.04 seconds. She also earned a second-place finish in the 60-meter with a time of 7.77 seconds.
Â
Along with these two performances, senior
Simone Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn.) ran the 400-meter dash, finishing in fifth out of 12 runners. Senior
Cassandra Garza (Grafton, Wis.) qualified for the meet in the shot put, where she finished in 13th with an 11.34-meter throw.
Â
Rounding out the competition for the Cougars was the 4x400-meter relay team of Wilson, Armstrong, junior
Karissa Walters (Zeeland, Mich.) and senior
Angelina Nichols (Chicago, Ill.). The team finished in seventh-place for the meet, but that's not all they did. The group broke the school record in the event with a time of 4:03.61.
Â
This was the last indoor meet of the season for the Cougars. They will have a few weeks off before kicking off the outdoor season in the beginning of April.
