The Concordia University Chicago track and field teams competed in their final regular season meet at the Spartan Grand Prix hosted by Aurora University. At the end of the day, the women's team finished in second out of seven teams while the men finished in fourth of seven teams.
Â
Senior
Kayla Armstrong (Chicago, Ill.) had a great start to her first meet. She won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds, which was also good enough for her to finish in the top 10 in the NCAA. She also grabbed a second-place finish in the 200-meter, falling behind an unattached athlete who was a former All-American at the University of Oregon.
Â
Also having a standout performance on the track was fellow senior
Simone Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn.). She finished one spot behind Armstrong in the 200 for third while also grabbing the silver in the 400-meter run, again finishing behind the former All-American from Oregon. Both Armstrong and Wilson were a part of the first-place 4x400 relay team that was made up of senior Angie Nichols (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman
Diana Almazan (Berwyn, Ill.).
Â
Nichols also contributed to the success of the women's team with a first-place finish in the 800. Senior
Cassandra Garza (Grafton, Wis.) also had a first-place finish in the shot put and a third-place finish in the weight throw.
Â
On the men's side, junior
Gustavo Alvarez (Chicago, Ill.) broke his own record yet again. He jumped a height of 4.60 meters, which was good enough for a first-place finish as well. This is the third consecutive meet where Alvarez broke his own record.
Â
In throws, sophomore
Shane Allen (Northlake, Ill.) grabbed a second-place finish with a throw of 13.07 meters. He also recorded a 12.56-meter throw in the weight throw, which got him fourth place in that event.
Â
This is the last regular season indoor meet for both of these teams. They will wait to find out who is invited to the DIII Elite Championships, which will be hosted by Wartburg University on March 12 and 13. Competitors invited to this meet will be announced in the coming weeks.
