River Forest, Ill. — Victory! After a 0-3 start to the season, Concordia Chicago women's basketball (1-3) picked up their first win of the season against the Rockford Regents (0-3) with a score of 63-46. They are the first CUC team to earn a victory since the COVID-19 shutdown last March.
The first quarter started off slow for the Cougars as they were outscored 11-8. But in the second half, the offense came to life, shooting their way to their highest scoring output on the young season. The defense provided a stifling performance of their own, holding the Regents to just 17-57 shooting from the floor. Â

The score remained fairly close throughout much of the game, but the Cougars turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter, outscoring Rockford 23-8. CUC shot 9-15 from the floor in the game's final period, including 2-3 from deep to cement their victory.Â

Leading the charge on offense was the sophomore duo of Bailey Steinkamp (Cary, Ill.) and Tara Hastings (New Lenox, Ill.), who combined for 39 points. Steinkamp led the way with 25 points on 8-16 shooting to go along with nine rebounds, while Hastings posted the first double-double of the season for the Cougars. Steinkamp took advantage of every opportunity, converting 7-7 free throw attempts.Â

Other key contributors included sophomore Mikalah Ellis (Chicago, Ill.), who scored 10 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Fellow sophomore Jaylene Wade (Lansing, Ill.) added eight points of her own in addition to three rebounds. Â
