River Forest, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago women's volleyball team hosted their annual Dig Pink Night as they faced the Lakeland University Muskies. The two teams took a moment of silence to remember those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer before first serve in Geiseman Gymnasium. Even though the Cougars had a better record than the Muskies coming into this match, they were not able to come out with a win.
All three sets showcased a close battle between the two teams. Concordia took the early lead in the first before Lakeland made their comeback about halfway through the set. The Cougars did not close out the match, losing the first 25-22. In the second set, the Muskies took control from the beginning and didn't let up as CUC lost 25-15. The third and final set started differently for the Cougars as they started from behind against Lakeland. Although they kept this set extremely close, they were not able to close it out and take the match to four, losing 25-23 in the third and final set.
Highlights of the Match:
- Sophomore Katie Stonich (Sadieville, Ky.) led the way for CUC tonight. The outside hitter was the only player to register double-digit kills as she finished the match with 10. She also added 14 digs to the stat sheet to give her another double-double this season.
- Senior libero Julia Beers (Mishawaka, Ind.) also contributed to the team's back row defense, registering 11 digs. She also had back-to-back aces in the third set for a total of two for the match.
- Tori Steele (Elizabethtown, Ky.) contributed to the team's success in the front row on defense as she grabbed three blocks.
The Cougars will be back in Geiseman Gymnasium tomorrow, Oct. 2, as they take on Concordia University Wisconsin at 12 p.m.
