Cougars WBB Fall in Home Opener

Box Score

March 7, 2020 was the last time a Concordia University Chicago team hosted a game of any sort. That changed on Saturday, when the women's basketball (0-2) team fell at the hands of the Greenville Panthers (1-2) by a final score of 69-43.

In their last scheduled game before beginning conference play, the Cougars again struggled to find a rhythm offensively, dealing with a stifling press from the Grenville defense throughout most of the game. Even though there were offensive struggles throughout, the Cougars began to piece together solid possessions in the final quarter. The 15 points scored in the fourth were the most the Cougars scored in a quarter all day.

There were some individual standouts for the Cougars despite the loss, including freshman guard Emily Balaban (Manitowoc, Wis.) posting a team-high 12 points. Sophomore guard Tara Hastings (New Lenox, Ill.) tallied nine points to go along with three steals on the defensive end.

Balaban filled out her stat sheet nicely, pulling down a team-high seven rebounds and dishing out two assists. Fellow freshman Kate Johnson (Lincoln, Neb.) also collected seven rebounds to go along with her impressive 3-5 performance from the floor. Johnson scored six of the 11 points off the bench for the Cougars.

Following a week off, the Cougars will be back in action next Saturday at home against Lakeland. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CDT.
