After losing their outdoor season to COVID-19, the Concordia University Chicago track and field teams were ready for competition. Today, they were able to kick off the indoor season at the Greyhound Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis. Although no team score was kept during the meet, there were a lot of individual performances worth highlighting from the event.
The most notable achievement for the men's team comes from junior transfer
Gustavo Alvarez. The pole vaulter broke a school record during his first meet as a Cougar and currently holds the best jump in the NCAA with a height of 4.49 meters, or 14-feet-8.75-inches. In this meet against Division I, II and III colleges, Alvarez finished third.
Also having a great performance for the men was sophomore
Shane Allen. The thrower finished first in the weight throw with a distance of 14.85 meters. He also finished fourth in the shot put out of 15 competitors with a throw of 13.51 meters.
On the women's side, senior captain
Cassandra Garza shined for the throwers. She threw a personal-best in the shot put with a distance of 12.12 meters, which helped her finish in third. In the weight throw, Garza finished in sixth with a 13.32-meter throw.
Senior
Simone Wilson also finished high for the Cougars in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 27.56 seconds. This time was good enough for a fourth-place finish in this event.
