Cougars Drop Opening Game

Sauget, Ill. - Concordia University Chicago (0-1) traveled five hours southbound for the opening weekend of the 2020 season. CUC would open up against UW-Oshkosh (1-1). The Cougars came out rolling early but would lose the lead mid-way through, and be forced to play from behind. Concordia-Chicago would not be able to comeback despite some last inning sparks, and would fall 8-5.

Turning Point: After an early explosion, CUC would surrender two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth. From there, UW-Oshkosh built the lead to 8-4 and never looked back.

Inside the Box Score:
  • Brody Mariotti (2-4) led the way with two hits and three RBIs
  • CUC would record four doubles on the day.
  • Despite scoring three runs in the first, Concordia-Chicago would not score again until the eighth inning.
  • Both teams only put together three scoring innings.
  • Two costly balks put runners in scoring position for the Titans.

Quick Recap:
  • In the 1st inning CUC put pressure on the Titans early. Mateo Calle doubled to center field in his first at-bat of the season, followed by a Brayden Benavides single.
  • One batter later, Mariotti sent the second double of the inning over the centerfielder's head, scoring three runs in the process.
  • Two three-and-out innings would ensue before any more runs could be scored.
  • In the top of the third, UW-Oshkosh rallied two runs in and cut the lead to 3-2.
  • One inning later, they would keep momentum and take the lead at 5-3.
  • Alex Crinigan would come in to relieve CUC starter, Cole Carman (0-1) and make quick work of the Titan batters.
  • The score would stay steady until the top of the 7th, when UW-Oshkosh sprinkled in three more runs.
  • Noah Dressler then succeeded Crinigan and went on to not allow any runs for the rest of the way.
  • The Cougars cut the lead to 8-4 off of a Howie Hatton RBI double going into the 9th inning.
  • Chasing four runs with three outs remaining, Gerry Maynard singled and shrunk the deficit to 8-5.
  • CUC's run would stop there they would and fall 8-5.

Up Next: Concordia-Chicago will play again tomorrow, March 1st, at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. They will play both North Park, and Webster University.
