CUC Dominates on Opening Day

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- The Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team took less than two minutes to record its first goal of the season, and never looked back, as the Cougars ran away with a dominant 16-2 win over Franklin College this afternoon.

Inside the Box Score:
  • As a team, the Cougars won 17 draw controls and shot 3-of-3 on free positions attempts. CUC last shot 100 percent on free position attempts back on March 30, 2019 against Aurora University.
  • The Cougars had seven different goal scorers, including Dolores Apreda, Rylee Orenstein, Nina Naes and Madison Perkins, who all recorded the first goals of their careers this afternoon.
  • Sophomore Emily Cyrwus led the team with four goals and 10 draw controls.
  • Elizabeth Cyrwus and Orenstein each recorded a hat trick, while Cyrwus led CUC with three caused turnovers.
  • Freshman goalie Ryan McGee picked up the first win of her career in net.
How it Happened:
  • Elizabeth Cyrwus wasted no time getting the Cougars on the board, as she scored an unassisted goal at the 28:06 mark.
  • Orenstein got into the mix shortly thereafter, as she nailed the first goal of her career to put CUC up 2-0 just five minutes into the match.
  • Less than 15 seconds after Orenstein's goal, Cyrwus once again got the offense rolling, giving Concordia-Chicago an early 3-0 cushion.
  • With 19:09 to go in the half, Perkins scored her first collegiate goal and continued on CUC's hot streak. After Perkins' goal, the Cougars scored seven more times before the conclusion of the half. Leslie Betancourt scored CUC's final goal of the frame before the break.
  • Opening up the second half with a 11-0 lead, Franklin finally got on the board with their first goal of the day. Now up by 10, Emily Cyrwus and Perkins rattled off three more goals between the two to put the Cougars back up to a 14-1 advantage.
  • Franklin scored once more before the conclusion of the game, but not before CUC added on two more scores to run away with the 16-2 opening day victory.
Up Next:
  • The Cougars will return to action this week for a midweek contest at Elmhurst College on Wednesday night. Game time is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
