ELMHURST, Ill. -- Hoping to win their second-straight game tonight, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars did just that as the women's lacrosse team dominated Elmhurst College in a 20-1 victory.
With the win, CUC starts the season off 2-0 for the first time in the program's history, as well as setting new records for most goals scored in a single game and least amount of goals allowed in a 60-minute span.Â
Inside the Box Score:
- After starting the season off 2-0, the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team is now on a five-game winning streak that dates back to last season. The Cougars' last loss came on April 7, 2019.
- Over the first two games of this season, Concordia has allowed just three goals.
- Sophomore Emily Cyrwus led CUC, with six points off four goals and two assists. This is the second time in as many games that the Chicago native has found the back of the net four times. Cyrwus also won six draw controls, picked up three ground balls and forced three turnovers.Â
- Freshman Bailey Steinkamp made her college lacrosse debut tonight, wasting no time, and scored three goals to go along with two assists. The rookie also won two draw controls, caused two turnovers and grabbed three ground balls.Â
- Fellow freshmen Rylee Orenstein and Brynn Beetow also recorded hat tricks tonight, as Beetow's first of the night was the first goal of her college career.Â
- Grace Miller also scored the first goal of her career against the Blue Jays, while goalkeeper Ryan McGee earned the second win of her career.
- After missing the latter half of the 2019 season due to injury, junior Michelle Ruan returned to the field tonight and quickly scored a free position goal.Â
How it Happened:
- CUC picked up right where they left off after last week's win, and scored the first goal of the night less than one minute into the match. Junior Elizabeth Cyrwus drove straight to the net, beating Elmhurst defenders, to find the back of the net.Â
- Two minutes later, Elizabeth Cyrwus was setting up offense at the top of the 12-meter fan and found Miller cutting in front of the Blue Jays' crease, as Miller was able to sieze CUC's second goal of the night.
- With a 3-0 lead, Elmhurst looked to clear the ball and get its offense going, however Emily Cyrwus intercepted a Blue Jay pass and returned the ball nearly 40 yards to capitalize on a one-on-one opportunity against Elmhurst's netminder.
- As 23:30 remained in the first, Steinkamp recovered a loose ball in the Cougars' offensive zone and deked several Elmhurst defenders before sending a bounce shot into the back of the net.
- Steinkamp's goal closed out CUC's opening five-goal tear, before the Blue Jays recorded their one and only goal of the night.
- After the Blue Jays scored, Concordia-Chicago recovered as Beetow scored from the left wing of the attacking zone and pushed CUC's lead to a 6-1 advantage.
- The Cougars ended the second half up 12-1, but not before Orenstein had a breakaway opportunity of her own, and Steinkamp and Beetow combined once more for a Cougar goal.Â
- Coming out of the break, the Cyrwus sisters started things back up, as the duo combined for a give-and-go goal, with Elizabeth dishing the assist on Emily's fourth goal of the night.
- With just under 20 minutes remaining, Ruan returned to the field for the Cougars, for the first time in 361 days, and drew herself a free position opportunity. Naturally, Ruan converted the opportunity into CUC's 16th goal of the game.Â
- With 5:42 left on the clock, freshman Nina Naes got into the scoring mix after a loose ball scrum ensued in front of Elmhurst's net, that Naes scooped up and shot over the Blue Jays' defenders. Naes' goal was the 18th of the night, and the one to break Concordia's previous program record of scoring 17 goals in a single game.
Up Next:
- This Saturday, CUC will return to the field to begin MWLC play against the Marian Sabres. Saturday's contest will mark the start of Concordia lacrosse's final season as a member of the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference, before joining the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference in 2021. The Cougars are 1-0 all time against the Sabres.Â
