CUC Women Shake Off Scarlet Hawks in Second Half

Box Score Jan. 18, 2020 - Fresh off an exciting win at home Thursday over Lakeland University, the Concordia-Chicago women's basketball team took aim at their second win in three days with a road contest at the Illinois Institute of Technology. While the Cougars led from start to finish, it took a while before they could shake the pesky Scarlet Hawks, but in the end, it was "mission accomplished" by CUC as they prevailed by a final score of 60-41.

TURNING POINT:
  • A 13-4 run at the end of the first half gave CUC a commanding 30-19 lead at the half. Jaylene Wade and Tara Hastings hit from downtown to cap the run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Bailey Steinkamp led the Cougars with 16 points including 4-8 from three-point range, followed by Tara Hastings with 11.
  • Meghan Long just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
  • The Cougars made their shots in the fourth quarter, hitting 7-15 from the field and all five of their free throws.
  • CUC finished with 11 assists and 10 steals against just 11 turnovers.
  • The Scarlet Hawks were led by Shannon O'Donnell's 10 points and 11 rebounds.

  • The Cougars bolted to a 12-0 lead behind a pair of threes by Bailey Steinkamp.
  • The Scarlet Hawks answered with the next nine points, and the Cougars' lead was three after one quarter.
  • After IIT got within two in the early minutes of the second quarter, CUC regrouped and outscored the hosts 13-4 to grab a 30-19 lead at the break.
  • CUC appeared ready to run away in the third quarter at 41-23, but IIT finished with a 9-0 run to cut CUC's lead to nine entering the fourth quarter.

  • The Cougars' defense held the hosts to just 28 percent shooting for the game.

The Cougars will go for their third consecutive win on Wednesday night in Milwaukee with a game against Alverno College.
