Cougars Drop First Matchup with Rival Stars

River Forest, Ill.- Concordia University Chicago took on Dominican University to kick off the beginning of the 2019-20 Division Street rivalry. CUC came in trying to break a twelve game losing streak to the Stars, dating back all the way to October of 2009. DU would take care of business in the first two sets, putting the Cougars in a 2-0 hole. CUC played lights out in set three, and pushed the game to a fourth set. The fourth set would be the final one, as DU got hot and put away the Cougars (19-25, 17-25, 25-17, 11-25).

Inside the Box Score:

CUC started off hot right out of the gate enroute to a 5-1 lead and forcing a Dominican timeout. Following the Stars' timeout, they quickly made up the deficit and tied it up at 5-5. Stamp would put an end to the Dominican run with a powerful kill, giving the Cougars back the lead at 6-5. Back and forth scoring ensued until DU took their largest lead of the match. The Stars would go up 18-15 and force a Concordia timeout. Unfortunately for the CUC that is the closest they would get. Dominican would pull away in set one and win 25-19.

Set two started similar to how the first one ended. The Stars soared out to a 5-0 lead and forced a Concordia-Chicago timeout. CUC would cut the lead to under five at 12-8, which in turn made the Stars call a timeout. Although the Cougars flirted with smaller deficits, Dominican would break open the second set to 21-13 and force another CUC timeout. After the second timeout, Stamp would record two kills in three plays, doing her best to keep the Cougars' pulse beating. No fire would spark from her efforts and the Stars would move onto the next set with a 25-17 win.

Concordia-Chicago was not ready to call it quits in set three. Led by a serving Beers, the Cougars forced Dominican to take two early timeouts while clinging to a 9-5 lead. The timeouts could not slow down Beers or the CUC attack and they would extend their lead even further to 13-5. DU battled back to 19-16 to pressure the Cougars into a timeout, but CUC seemed unrattled. They would roll into set four with an impressive 25-17 set win.

Dominican came out ready to rock in set four and jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. There was no answer for the Stars in set four and they would defeat CUC 25-11 concluding the four set match.

Concordia-Chicago is back in action at Darby Gymnasium on Friday, September 20th, where they will face off against Simpson College. Gametime is set for 5:00 p.m.
