Cougars Fall in First Day of Tournament

Grinnell, IA- Concordia University Chicago (6-8) took on Simpson College (5-5) and Grinnell College (11-2) in the first day of their weekend trip to the western Midwest. In the first match, CUC would face off against Simpson College for the fourth time in program history. The Cougars would drop a close set one but bounce back with two straight wins. Simpson would force a fifth set and end up winning the match (24-26, 25-23, 25-12, 17-25, 19-21). In the second game, CUC would drop straight sets to Grinnell College (19-25, 19-25, 12-25).
 
 
Inside the Box Score: 
  • In game one, Alyssa Henline recorded her third double-double (14 kills, 29 digs) of the season.
  • Jaylynn Johnson (19), Julia Spitelli (18), and Henline (15) led the way with kills in the two games.
  • Receiving errors (13) plagued the Cougars in the second game. 
 
Concordia-Chicago opened up in their first match against Simpson College with a competitive first set that ended in a Cougar defeat. CUC would follow up with two huge sets. In set four they dominated by a score of 25-12. Simpson would rebound and bring it to a final deciding set. In the final set, 15 points were not enough to claim a winner. Simpson would pull out a close one that ended 21-19 and in turn won the game altogether.
 
 
The Cougars looked to bounce back in the second game of the evening, but they were matched up against a tough Grinnell College opponent that only held two losses on the season. CUC would show fight throughout the three sets but could not ever get enough momentum to steal a win. 
 
 
Concordia-Chicago will take on Wartburg College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. There will be a second game following against Central College at 3:00 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
