RIVER FOREST, ILL. – After a strong 3-1 performance at the Knox College tournament, the Concordia University Chicago Women's Volleyball team returns to Geiseman Gymnasium tonight to open NACC play against arch rival Dominican University.
The Cougars enter NACC play after a 6-6 start to their season. They are winners of three straight heading into tomorrow's match. CUC is 9-14 against the Stars since the 2001 season. Last season Dominican defeated CUC on their home court in three sets. Last time the two sides met inside Geiseman it was a five set thriller that the Stars won 3-2. Jaylynn led the team that night with 15 kills.
Johnson got going for CUC last weekend. The senior had a career high 18 kills against MacMurray and finished with 49 kills in the four matches. Sophomore
Alex Clasen stepped in for CUC this weekend and performed well in the setter position. The CUC Athlete of the Week finished 54 assists and 12 digs over the four matches and committed just one ball handling error.
Blocking and serving have been the bread and butter for CUC this season. CUC ranks 14
th nationally in total blocks, 19
th in team aces and 25
th in blocks per set. Additionally,
Alyssa Henline ranks 16
th nationally in aces, while
Shannon Stamp and
Caroline Gibbons rank 47
th and 60
th in blocks respectively.
The Cougar offense got going this weekend as well, finishing with a season high 57 kills in the win over MacMurray, while hitting a season high .342 against St.Mary of the Woods. CUC also committed a season low number of errors (8) against St.Mary's.
