Here's What Happened
Set One
The Raiders opened set one with a pair of kills to jump out on top. The Cougs responded promptly, as Debanhi Moreno (Dallas, Texas) would even the score at four with her first kill of the day. The Raiders locked in and took a comfortable 12-6 lead, but didn't see it last long as six consecutive scores from the Cougs with kills from Perkins, Day, Bethany Roethel (Westby, Wis.) and a couple from Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) would even up the score. The Cougs would only be able to put together five more points in the set, as MSOE ran away thanks to numerous kills and some costly Cougs errors. The Raiders took set one 25-17, advancing to set two 1-0.
Set Two
Set Two was the best action today, involving an intense back-and-forth battle on the court. A service ace from Brenner and a kill from Cooper would put the cougars on top quickly, as they took a solid four point lead early. The Raiders responded with four points of their own, tying the set at 10 a piece. After a lengthy exchange of scoring, the match was tied at 23 after another kill from Day, moving the Cougars just two scores from tying up the match score. A Raider kill and costly Cougs attack error would give MSOE another victory, taking set two 25-23 and advancing to set three 2-0.
Set Three
The Raiders, just one more set victory from a win, came into set 3 at full force, scoring eight consecutive serves to take a controlling 10-1 lead. After exchanging scores, the Cougs found themselves trailing big, and put together a positive rally, with a kill from Perkins, a service ace from Malainna Adler (Fenton, Mo.), and a kill from Ava Quevedo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to give the home fans some hope. While their efforts fell short, the Cougs battled well and refused to give up, scoring twice on the brink of elimination with a kill from Quevedo and another Adler service ace. However, the MSOE Raiders would finish off a dominant 25-16 set win on a service error, and swept the Cougars 3-0.
