Cougar Women Fall to Top-Seeded Pipers

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In a Sunday matinee showdown, Concordia-Chicago took on the number one seed in the MWLC, Hamline University.

Despite a hard fought effort from the Cougars, Hamline showed its strength in the contest, ultimately winning 18-4.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Shots on goal ended 28-14, in favor of the Pipers.
  • Offense was shared between four different Cougars today, with Margaret Doane scoring the team-high two goals while Sydney Fuller dished a pair of assists.
As the game opened up, Doane wasted no time putting CUC on the board. From the top of the 12, the senior worked her way around a Piper defender and beat three Hamline players on a strong shot that fell past the netminder. With an early 1-0 lead, CUC's defense went to work but the Pipers managed to slip two goals past the Cougars less than two minutes into the game.

At the 22:06 mark, freshman Emily Cyrwus drove through the zone to earn a free position attempt. On the attempt, the rookie rifled the ball past Hamline and tied up the game at two goals apiece.  After Cyrwus' goal, the Cougar offense would be iced for almost the remainder of the half. As Hamline had pulled ahead to a 10-2 lead, Fuller found graduate student Anna Kellar streaking across the far side of the crease, as Kellar was able to score the long-range goal with 39 seconds left in the half. Doane once again fired up the Cougars, scoring her second of the day just over a minute into the half. As CUC inched closer to Hamline, 10-4, the Pipers managed to go on an eight-goal tear that solidified their MWLC victory.

With the loss, CUC drops to 6-6 on the year but will return to action next Saturday against Monmouth College. Game time will begin at approximately 1 p.m.
