Total Team Effort Leads to Weekend Win

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- With goal scoring shared between five different Cougars, the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team trounced Monmouth College this afternoon, defeating the Scots 17-8.

With today's win, the 2018-19 Cougars have brought their season win total to seven, marking the winningest season in CUC's program history.

"I'm really happy with how this team has grown this season," said Head Coach Russell Allen. "We have been able to develop a winning culture, where we finish close games off and we fight until the final whistle blows. I'm incredibly proud of this group of young women."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • With Concordia-Chicago's 17th goal of the day, sophomore Leslie Betancourt recorded her first career goal and point.
  • CUC's veteran trio of Anna Kellar, Sydney Fuller and Margaret Doane combined for 19 of the Cougars' 23 points today.
  • Freshman defender Dolores Apreda has become an integral part of CUC's defense, causing six turnovers today and picking up three ground balls.
En route to her seven-point performance, Doane started off the scoring for CUC today. Taking the ball all the way downfield, Doane beat three Scots defenders and the goalie to put Concordia-Chicago on the scoreboard. Down just 1-0, Monmouth's Amanda Green went on to score two consecutive goals to giver her team a 2-1 advantage. However, with the lead just 10 minutes into the game, it would be the last time all day that the visitors controlled the score of the game.

After falling behind, Kellar and Doane combined for three goals in a two-minute span and regained momentum of the match. While CUC and the Scots exchanged goals for the remainder of the half, the early push allowed the Cougars to head into halftime with breathing room, in a 7-5 lead.

Starting off the second half, Fuller started from the top of the 12 and cut through the near side of the field to dump the ball in over Monmouth's goalie.  CUC struggled to pull ahead by more than three goals all day. However, with 12:44 left in regulation, Fuller found Kellar in front of the crease as the Collinsville native was able to rattle off another goal and give Concordia-Chicago the four-goal lead.

With a 12-8 lead and nearly 10 minutes remaining, the Cougars finished off the game with six straight goals to win in a dominating 17-8 fashion. Concordia-Chicago will return to action next weekend on the road as they face Wartburg in more Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference action.
